    Since founded in 1941, Coach enjoys great popularity and maintains a profit margin several times higher than competitor designer brands. Nevertheless, not everything goes smoothly for the luxury handbag and accessories manufacturer. Although it did a marvelous feat for so many years, in the middle and late 1990s, Coach witnessed a dramatic recession in sales.

    Coach was founded in 1941 by 6 artisans under the name Manhattan Leather Bags. One of the company founders was impressed by the design of a baseball glove and it inspired him to create a handbag with similar attributes. In 1962, Coach hired Bonnie Cashin. Cashin breathed new life into the company. She was considered a pioneer in American sportswear due to her use of industrial hardware and organic materials such as leather, wool and jersey. Riding the success of Cashin’s creations, the company gets to one of the top luxury brands. Although the new items add many fashion elements compared with its previous conservative series, the company still runs in the traditional way.

In 1985, Coach became part of Sara Lee and in 1979, Lew Frankfort, who today serves as Coach’s CEO, joined the company. Frankfort transformed Coach from a little-known leather goods manufacturer to a world-renowned brand. However, in the middle 90s, because of dramatic changes in working environment, business casual wear was big that time. But Coach still clinged to its outdated goods and did not offer the fashion products, such as leather and fabric bags. As a result, Coach failed to compete with Prada, Gucci and Kate Spade.

    Faced with the challenge, Frankfort launched a series of expansions 090402-tracy-the-history-of-coach01and innovations. He hired the newest designers who breathed new life into the company and changed the image of Coach from a sturdy, basic collection of tan, burgundy, black and navy briefcases, to a hip, stylish collection with new colors and styles every season, which greatly attracted a number of young people. Moreover, in the fashion world full of change, Coach put its new product on the market every year. Meanwhile, the company outsourced the manufacture and concentrated on product design and marketing. Therefore, at the end of 90s, Coach sprang up again.

    Thereafter, the annual profits have been soaring. In 2006 its sales reached US$2.1. Keeping pace with the times is the key reason why this company shakes off the image of “only my grandmother buys Coach” and successfully survives in the fickle fashion world with soaring profits.

    Carrying a not-so high-ender designer handbag doesn’t mean a person doesn’t have the money or she’s simply not the type who likes to spend a lot. Well the latter would be a much acceptable reason, but either way, there’s nothing wrong if one is toting a rather cheap handbag designer bag.

    Take for example Halle Berry. We know that she is indeed famous and all and she got all the riches, we suppose; but even though she opted to carry a handbag from Coach, which is a low-ender designer brand than that of Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Gucci, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the wealth to buy those luxurious high-end ones. It seems like she’s the type who really doesn’t spend a lot for fashion, which is somewhat good as well considering what the world is facing right now.

    Still, although her Coach Editorial Zoe Bag isn’t that eye-catching, she knows how to put up a nice outfit together. The white shade of the bag is just in time for the summer and it as well adds a fresh look to every getup.

Typically we would cover this Coach bag on Savvy, but I actually wanted to feature this on PurseBlog.

    Coach bags receive quite a bit of flack from many handbag enthusiasts. And while this may be the case, Coach continues to be the brand that starts many people’s handbag obsession on their way into other brands while remaining the go-to brand for many as well. In fact, my first bag was a Coach bag.


    In the past few years I have loved the direction Coach has taken. The collection is so diverse, it is easy to find a bag that suits different tastes and wants. Here we are with the Coach Madison Floral Audrey and I am in love. I am not typically drawn to floral print bags, but with spring around the corner as I see more floral prints I also realize how much I would love one.

    The combination is romantic, with the feminine colorful floral printed canvas being accented with gold metallic leather trim. I just bought a new floral printed pillow cover for our couch from Williams Sonoma that reminds me of this bag. I keep staring at the pillow and realizing that I can no longer fight my old aversion to floral prints, I now embrace it.

    Another reason I love the idea of this bag is because it is a trendier style that you may not wear year round, so it is perfect not to spend thousands on a trend. Dimensions are 11.5 L x 8.25 H x 6.5 W. Also, there is both top handles and a detachable shoulder strap. Buy through Coach for $358 (they have the purple version).
